Here is a photo of Nicky enjoying some sunflower sprouts at my table at the New York Capital Region’s Vegetarian Festival.
Nicky was one of over 1500 at New York Capital Region’s Vegetarian Festival in Albany New York. attendees and it felt like I got to speak to every one of them! A very enthusiastic crowd and with the Northeast Winter ahead, a lot of them are now looking forward to growing living foods right in their kitchens. No soil, no green thumb required.
There were a dozen national known speakers talking about the environment, your health, and animal rights. And also this great cruelty-free fashion show where several very attractive male and female models showcased vegan clothing lines from nationally known clothing designers. There was a young and vibrant crowd watching and it was lots of fun.
Besides Sproutman some of the exhibitors there were: Catskill Animal Sanctuary, Eatingfoodraw.com, Emmy’s Organics, Environmental Advocates of New York, Equal Exchange Coop, Javafit Coffee, Mercy for Animals, Family Wellness Center, The Power of a Plant Based Diet, The Vegetarian Resource Group, T.O.F.U. Magazine, Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, X’s To O’s Vegan Bakery, Zorbas Natural Food, to name a few.
Also there was the not-to-forget North American Vegetarian Society which holds a not-to-be-missed convention in Johnstown Penn. every summer. Check it out at www.vegetariansummerfest.org.
Most of the vendor sold out of all their goods prior to the end of the expo. A great time was had by all.

Food is being delivered from farther and farther away as the global distribution system delivers tomatoes from Holland and cantaloupe from Chile. Agricultural chemicals banned in North America are nevertheless showing up on our dinner plates. Rising oil prices are perpetually raising the price of our long-distance, imported diet.
Steve Meyerowitz, the “Sproutman®” is a health crusader whose passion is to return to the concept, practiced over a hundred years ago, where most families provided their own food. The only transportation involved in this approach is the one from the garden to the dinner table. Says Meyerowitz, “You don’t need a peer reviewed study to know that this is the healthiest food in the world.” But the problem is: “We live in the Northeast where home gardening is not an option most of the year or we reside in apartments several stories above the city pavement.” Meyerowitz‘ solution: “Kitchen Gardening.” — A no-soil approach using baby versions of many common vegetables, grains, and beans. He calls these “The World’s Healthiest Vegetables” because as baby plants, they concentrate their nutrition many times over the mature version of the same vegetable.
Sproutman will demonstrate how you can grow your own victory garden of fresh organic foods and become less dependent on the commercial food network. It’s easy. It’s delicious. It’s healthy. Kids love it. You can literally watch your food grow. His motto is “One week from seed to salad®.” Find out how easy it is to grow these amazing living foods and how they can add energy to your days, and years to your life.

RIRDC Project No DAQ-342A, June 2007, Dr Tim O’Hare Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, Queensland Horticulture Institute, Gatton Research Station
Objectives
Identify daikon and radish varieties with highest anti-cancer activity, following on from DAQ-307A which identified daikon and radish sprouts as having extremely high anti-cancer potential. Provide labeling advice in relation to the strongest possible claims that can be made.
Progress (June 2007)
Daikon and radish were analyzed at the seed and sprouted-seed stage to identify cultivars high in the anti-cancer glucosinolate, glucoraphenin. Of the cultivars tested, ‘Cherry Belle’ and ‘Black Spanish’ maintained highest levels of glucoraphenin. Levels were highest in seed, and decreased with increasing sprout age. Decline in concentration was largely due to dilution associated with cell expansion, and partly due to other mechanisms. Differences in the latter appear to have impact on anti-cancer potential.
Analysis of mature daikon and radish tissue (roots and shoots) indicated that the principal glucosinolate in roots of all cultivars was glucodehydroerucin, which is estimated to have one tenth the potency of glucoraphenin, the principal glucosinolate found in seeds and young sprouts. By contrast, the principal glucosinolates present in mature shoots were glucoraphanin and glucoraphenin, both potent anti-cancer agents. Shoots were estimated to have approximately 20 times the anti-cancer potential of roots.

On May 11, 2011, the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) released a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) on the first-ever genetically engineered (GE), drought tolerant corn, MON 87460. APHIS is currently soliciting comments on this unprecedented GE crop, due August 12, 2011. The Center for Food Safety has reviewed the Draft EA, and, our analysis shows that has USDA not adequately analyzed or accounted for the various environmental and socio-economic impacts of this novel crop, and Monsanto has failed to make any significant progress on drought resistance through genetic engineering. As with previous GE crop approvals, USDA’s proposal fails to comply with national environmental law, making APHIS’s approval illegal.
USDA’s proposal:
- Fails to adequately consider and protect organic consumers
- Fails to recognize farmers and consumers have the right to choose non-GE
- Fails to analyze the benefits of drought-tolerant organic corn as an alternative to MON87460
- Fails to use sound science and relies excessively on Monsanto data
- Fails to assess the environmental impacts of converting conservation land to MON87460 production
Tell USDA to obey the law! Further analysis and environmental protections are necessary before any approval should be considered.
