Imbalance between production and scavenging of superoxide anion results in hypertension by the inactivation of nitric oxide, and the increased oxidative stress from the resultant peroxynitrite that is produced promotes inflammatory processes such as atherosclerosis. Induction of phase 2 proteins promotes oxidant scavenging. We hypothesized that intake of dietary phase 2 protein inducers would ameliorate both hypertension and atherosclerotic changes in the spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rat. For 5 days/week for 14 weeks, we fed rats 200 mg/day of dried broccoli sprouts that contained glucoraphanin, which is metabolized into the phase 2 protein-inducer sulforaphane (Group A), sprouts in which most of the glucoraphanin was destroyed (Group B), or no sprouts (Group C). After 14 weeks of treatment, no significant differences were seen between rats in Groups B and C. Rats in Group A had significantly decreased oxidative stress in cardiovascular and kidney tissues, as shown by increased glutathione (GSH) content and decreased oxidized GSH, decreased protein nitrosylation, as well as increased GSH reductase and GSH peroxidase activities. Decreased oxidative stress correlated with better endothelial-dependent relaxation of the aorta and significantly lower (20 mm Hg) blood pressure. Tissues from Groups B and C had considerable numbers of infiltrating activated macrophages, indicative of inflammation, whereas animals in Group A had few detectable infiltrating macrophages. There is interest in dietary phase 2 protein inducers as means of reducing cancer incidence. We conclude that a diet containing phase 2 protein inducers also reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular problems of hypertension and atherosclerosis.

THIS TUESDAY CLEAN OUT, LIGHTEN UP, FEEL FABULOUS
This Tuesday and next, I am leading a group of folks on an easy cleanse. (It’s an online class that you can take from your home.) Many of you know that I lead juice fasting clinics 3-4 times per year. But this Kwik Cleanse is designed for those of you who are not quite up to the task of fasting. So if your schedule doesn’t allow the commitment required for the more intensive cleanse of a fast, then join me for a week focused on cleansing with a lighter and more flexible regimen.
Who Needs this Program?
Truthfully, we all need to cleanse periodically. Even those of us who are relatively disciplined and conscientious, still need cleansing because it is just a normal part of the way our bodies work. Think of your house. If you consider yourself a clean person, you probably keep up with it on a regular basis. But there is still a need for a more thorough “Spring Cleaning” once or twice per year.
So, if you are feeling perhaps a little achy in the head or in the joints, or a little bloated; if you’re moving slowly or are slightly fatigued; if your mental acuity is not what it should to be, or if you’re just feeling a little heavy, then this could be your opportunity to clean out, lighten up, and feel fabulous.
P.S. This is a web seminar. It runs an hour and a half. Just like in a real classroom, you get to interact and ask questions with the instructor (me) and other students. You sit in front of your computer. You call in on your telephone or call SKYPE style using a computer headset/microphone. You’ll get all the sign-up details after you register.

by Steve Meyerowitz, “Sproutman”
Occasionally, I get asked “what do you eat?” I understand that it is a natural curiosity especially for those starting out on their health journey. But a classroom or lectern are poor places to truly answer such a question and I typically demur. Actually, I have trouble with the question. In my opinion, we all need to tailor our diets to our personal needs and my diet should never be your diet. Just as on the outside we all dress differently, on the inside our organs and glands are also unique. Rather, I recommend we listen to our bodies and be guided by the signals we get and then feed ourselves accordingly. That being said, I also understand the value of comparison and example. So finally, I have given in. What follows is a sort of typical day for me with the focus on food. I hope you find something in it for you.
